SFT Fenders Protect New Berth in Tórshavn, Faroer Island

bulkhead seawall

Tórshavn, the Faroe Islands’ largest and busiest port, was facing limited operational space in 2016 and the container traffic was about to outgrow capacity in the near future. It was time to act. Therefore, the Port of Tórshavn and the local entrepreneur J&K Petersen signed the largest harbor expansion ever taken place on the Faroer Islands in November 2016.

The increasing vessel sizes were another reason to extend the harbor but also to deepen the berths to meet the requirements for the vessels of the future. The planned port development added an additional 95,000 m2 to the existing 45,000 m2 of space and 900 m of quay to the existing harbor.
95% of the GBP from the Faroer Island is driven by fishing and the island also sees an increase in tourism. Hence, cruise ships will come more often to the Faroer Islands, posing a challenge to the existing harbor which would not have had the capacity to handle the increasing traffic.

The new berth is equipped with different types of high-quality fenders from ShibataFenderTeam, most of them being Cylindrical Fenders, 125 in total (OD1200 x ID 600 x 20000mm). Additionally, 14 Special Element Fenders were installed and 5 Element Fender Systems were coupled to form a closed round head fender system.

Through the port expansion, extra maneuvering space for current activities was provided and, even more important, room for future expansion of the port’s business were made.

We wish the Port of Tórshavn a successful start with the new berth and the future development. (#3735)
