The powerful and universal Liebherr rotary drilling rig type LB 24 employed in foundation works in the business district La Défense in Paris.

Nenzing (Austria), November 2015 – Thanks to their large range of applications Liebherr deep foundation machines can be found on jobsites all over the globe. Close to the city centre of Paris an LB 24 rotary drilling rig is being used by the construction company Bouygues SA for the erection of a new apartment building.

In the business district La Défense, located west of the inner city, an 18-storey building housing both apartments and a school is being constructed. Due to the fact that the new building complex is situated directly beside a track of the Parisian rapid transit system RER, a subway is also being built.

A Liebherr LB 24 rotary drilling rig belonging to the company Franki Fondation Groupe Fayat was used for laying the foundation. The LB 24 installed piles with a length of up to 30 m and a diameter of approximately 1,500 mm, using the Kelly drilling method. Beams of 2 m in width, 4 m in height and 20 m in length are now being placed upon these piles.

Thanks to its performance, easy transportation and fast assembly the LB 24 was the perfect machine for this task. Considering the limited space on the construction site its compact design was a further advantage.

The LB 24 belongs to the LB series of Liebherr rotary drilling rigs. The machine with a total weight of 76 t is equipped with a 270 kW diesel engine. A special technical benefit of the LB 24 is its rope crowd system with a push and pull force of 20 t. Thus, the user has maximum performance and reliability, even under difficult soil and operating conditions.

The leader system and the robust kinematics of the LB 24 with a large cross section are unique technical features. In addition, the rotary drilling rig is equipped with the BAT rotary drive manufactured by Liebherr, offering a torque of 270 kNm. The main advantages of the hydraulic drive are automated torque adjustment, continuous speed optimization and four electronically adjustable speed ranges. Further advantages of the rotary drive are its simple structure, its low maintenance requirements and, above all, its exceptional efficiency.
