Iraq’s Imperilled Mosul Dam

The micro drilling rig SM-5, on show in next Bauma exhibition, will be used by Trevi in its electrical version SM-5E for the interesting jobsite at Mosul Dam in Iraq. The intervention consists of a series of grout injections for the consolidation of the dam’s bottom foundation, up to 130m deep, to improve the water resistance.

The job site characteristics are very interesting, the SM-5E will work in a very confined space, located inside the 3-km long pre-existing tunnel only 2m high and 3m wide with constant and heavy leakage of water. Their need is to work with the lowest exhaust emission possible, with a small but powerful rig.

The SM-5E is designed to reach flexibility in kinematic mechanism, minimum operating costs and high performance. In order to operate in buildings and tunneling applications Soilmec has developed an electric engine version, which has a rated power of 75 kW reducing the exhausted gas emissions. The wide range of movements are provided by two slew rings the first at the base machine allows rotations of +/- 90° which permit drilling over the side of the crawlers, while the second on mast gives +/- 180° to achieve radial drilling.

In addition the rig is provided with ground stabilisers, 200mm telescopic zoom stroke and a modular mast on a counter-slide. The SM-5E can be radio-controlled reducing costs and time during operation, in either the drilling or in kinematic mechanisms phase.

Once again the synergy between the experience of Trevi and Soilmec technology will be the key to success.
