Technical Program Summary

Chicago is the birthplace of the modern skyscraper with the Home Insurance Building, a steel framed structure, rising 10 stories to the height of 138 feet (42 m) in 1885. Today, Chicago has over 1250 skyscrapers, including the Willis (Sears) Tower and John Hancock Building. Chicago is also known for challenging subsurface conditions including the urban lls resulting from the Chicago Fire, Chicago blue clay, hardpan and limestone bedrock underlying these world renowned structures.

The technical program will consist of the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s boat tour with the docent providing historical and architectural facts about the buildings and bridges in downtown Chicago while cruising on the Chicago River. For SuperPile ‘16, DFI’s WiDF Committee will supplement the docent’s narrative with a foundations perspective and will provide information on the geotechnical design and construction of the deep foundations, tunnels and dock walls that support the Chicago infrastructure.

DFI will award 1.0 PDH and a General Participation Certificate to each attendee.
